  • Vermont saw 13,404,000 tourist visits (including in-state and out-ofstate visitors, as well as international visitors)

  • Tourists’ direct expenditures for goods and services totaled $1.57 billion

  • The Vermont tourism industry directly or indirectly supports 36,250 jobs (approximately 1 in every 10 jobs in the state)

  • Visitor spending contributed about $196.4 million in revenues to the state of Vermont (largely through lodging, gas, and property taxes)


Visitors by Season and Origin
  • According to commercial lodging receipts, winter accounts for 40.0% of lodging revenues, summer accounts for 28.3%, fall accounts for 23.4%, and spring accounts for 8.3%

  • 54.9% of visitors were of domestic origin, 19.5% were Canadian visitors, 0.5% were other international visitors, and 24.9% were Vermonters

Visitor Lodging
  • 59.8% of all visitors, an estimated 8.0 million visitors, spent one or more nights in Vermont

  • 55% of overnight visitors stayed in commercial lodging such as a motel, hotel, B&B, rental home, or campground

  • 40.7% of visitors staying in commercial lodging originated from the Mid-Atlantic states of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and 32.6% originated from New England states other than Vermont

  • Visitors staying in commercial lodging stayed an average 2.3 nights per visit

Visitor Spending
  • On average, day-visitors spent $66.05 per person trip on transportation, food and beverage, and retail shopping items; overnight visitors spent $177.37 on these goods and services, as well as lodging

  • Lodging accounts for 23.7% of visitor expenditures, food and beverage for 22.5%, and shopping for 21.4%

Tourist Industry and Employment
  • Vermont restaurants are almost one and a half times as dependent on visitor spending than the national average, and retail is more than two times as dependent

  • Every million dollars of visitor spending supports 23 jobs in the travel industry

  • An additional 8,514 visitors will increase travel industry output by $1.0 million
